HAVE YOU BOUGHT YOUR COUNCIL HOUSE

IN THE LAST 6 YEARS ?

The Right-to-Buy scheme was intended to help council house residents buy

their homes at a discount. Depending on the length of tenancy decided the level of discount and rose to the maximum of 60%. What was considered a brilliant scheme to allow people into the world of home ownership for the first time also gave others an opportunity to abuse their position and missell the mortgage.

Right-to-Buy Mortgage mis-selling became a regular occurrence as the scheme expanded and more people took their first step to home ownership. Mortgage brokers and marketers realised that they could cash in on the subsidised purchase price by adding on high mortgage arrangement fees. In many instances these could be thousands of pounds.

They would offer to take care of all the paperwork in return for a fee which would be added to the mortgage. What they didn’t tell the borrower was the fact that they would be charged interest on the fees for the term of the mortgage. In a lot of instances solicitors were chosen by the advisor and in some cases they falsified quotes for home improvements to secure a larger mortgage to cover their own fees.

There are different types of missold mortgages but these include:

  • Brokers adding a large fee onto the mortgage

  • Increased mortgage rates after 3 years

  • Misselling of Payment Protection Insurance (PPI)

Was your mortgage arranged through one of these companies:

  • The Review Company

  •  Home and County Mortgages

  • Council Home Buyers

  • Tenants Rights

  •  Regency Mortgages

  •  Diamond Lifestyle Mortgages
